So here’s the question: “Nu Skool Breaks: Yes or No?”

There’s certainly some great tunes out there (this being one of them) and they certainly get the party jumpin’ alright.

“So what’s your problem?” I hear you ask…

It’s just that somehow after a whole evening of the stuff the excitement wears off and they all start to sound the same: there’s just not enough variation in the beats or the synth sounds to sustain interest over a long period. Part of the problem seems to me to be a lack of innovation – a whole load of “Nu Skool Breaks” tunes have been churned out simply by laying a formulaic fat-beat-and-bassline under samples from and old rave, house or garage track, with little attention given to quality or structure because with a beat that fat it will work on the dancefloor anyway.

So that’s simple then: just stick to a little bit when you fancy it!

OK so rant over, why the hell am I posting this tune?
Because it’s a great jump-up party tune, with a fat-beat-and-bassline, lets-get-excited vocal line and some nice subtle hoovers going on in the background. It’s taken from “Breaks, Beats and Blondes” on Botchit & Scarper, which you’ll probably like if you like nu-skool breaks, and you probably won’t otherwise.

I’m also intrigued by the title of the track – why “Bushpig”?
The vocals come from guest vocalist Yolanda, but I’d hope they don’t mean her, and as far as I can tell there’s no clue in the lyrics… answers on a postcard please.

bush pig n. A slightly more polite term for a swamp hog (qv).
swamp hog or swamp donkey n. A female bereft of physical beauty; tug boat; boiler; sea monster; steg.
steg n. Woman resembling a ferocious, spiny, squat, pre-historic dinosaur. abbr. Stegosaurus.

  • 01/12/07--20:34: Out of Sight - Polar Pair feat. Talisman (chan 2679123)
  • As ever, on the cutting edge of the latest musical styles, I present a tune from early 2005.

    Hmm…a nice song though…

Polar Pair are from Israel and appear to big shot DJs over there, not many other releases to speak of, but I did hear Diplo drop this on his radio show.

A lovely little pop ditty with a big big squidgy baseline, released on the excellent Tru Thoughts label – check it out!

  • OK, I’ve been away from the UK for quite a while now, so I don’t know if you’re all sick of this already or not.

    I’m not.

Obvious comparisons between “Losing my Edge” by LCD Soundsystem spring to mind, but with a nice UK edge (maybe I’m just homesick?) and a touch more cynicism.

I’m actually not going to post the tune, cos I think you should all head over to the fantastic Bleep.com and spend a couple of hard earned pounds (not available in the US yet) thumbing your nose at iTunes. I’ve mentioned them before, but it’s a great site with ALL of the Warp back catalogue as really high quality mp3s with no DRM.
